Continental Tyres Womens National League
Cork City 0-1 Peamount United
The PEAS got back to winning ways in the Continental Tyre's Womens National League when they traveled to Bishopstown in Cork to take on Cork City. The Peas looked to dominate this encounter from kick off and went close to opening the scoring after a couple of minutes when Lucy McCartan shot first time following a Cork clearance but her shot failed to trouble the Cork Keeper. Lauren Kelly was next to try her luck from distance when she cleverly turned her defender before firing a right foot shot which was destined for the bottom corner of the net only for it to take a slight deflection and went out for a corner. Louise Corrigan rose highest to Niamh Farrellys Corner but the defender saw her header go wide. Cork's Lauren Homan set up Ciara Desmond with a chance but the striker saw her shot go narrowly wide of Brooke Dunne goal. The Peas continued to press the Cork defenders and Sarah McKevitt was next to try from distance but Trisha Fennelly wasn't troubled by the shot. Captain Clare Kinsella set up Farrelly but her shot just went over the Crossbar. The Peas were been restricted to long range efforts by the Cork Defense and Lauryn O Callaghan tried to fire the Peas ahead with a thirty yard effort but Fennelly saved her shot. Lafferty, McKevitt & Farrelly all saw efforts saved by Fennelly as the Peas looked for a goal.
Cork began the second half with a twenty yard shot from Roisin O Connell but Brooke Dunne dealt with it with ease. Niamh Farrelly thought she should of been awarded a penalty when her shot seemed to hit a Cork Defenders arm in the box but the Match official waved play on. The Peas piled more pressure on their Cork counterparts with Clare Kinsella shot saved well by Fennelly followed by Kelly's shot just going wide of the post. Cork's Lauren Homan fired a shot wide following a corner kick from Maggie Duncliffe. Niamh Farrelly once again tried her luck from long range when her effort from thirty five yards just went over the crossbar. The Peas were finally rewarded for all their hard work when Lucy McCartan raced from midfield to intercept a Fennelly goal kick and the midfielder burst forward into the box before unselfishly crossing the ball into the path of Lauren Kelly who made no mistake from close range, Tapping into an empty net . The Peas should of doubled their lead minutes later when Lauryn O Callaghan sent in a lovely cross for Clare Kinsella who was unmarked at the time but the Captain took a touch instead of first time shot and this gave the Cork defenders a chance to get back and clear the danger. Cork had the last shot of the match when Danielle Burke broke free of the Peas defense but her shot was to weak to trouble Dunne. The Peas claimed all three points and now prepare themselves for another journey, this time to Mayo where they take on Castlebar Celtic next Saturday.
