Peamount United lose eight goal thriller !!
The Peamount United young stars traveled away for the third game in succession in the Continental Tyre's Womens National League and confidence was high in the camp having picked up six points from six in the previous two matches but this game was always going to be tough. The Peas began the match the much stronger and should of opened the scoring when Sarah Mckevitt sent over a delightful cross to the back post for Clare Kinsella's header which looked like it was heading for the back of the net only for McGuirk to palm it away.
The Peas piled on the pressure on the back four of UCD and went close on several occasions with McKevitt teeing up Barrett in the six yard box only for the striker to volley wide. The Peas took the lead when the ball hit off Kinsella before finding its way into the back of the net following a cross.
UCD drew level when a corner ball was volleyed by Catherine Cronan goal-wards and Brooke Dunne misjudged the flight & pace of the ball ending up with it across the line. The home side then took the lead when O Gorman muscled her way past Corrigan on the right before firing a fierce cross which Dunne saved but Cronan pounced on the rebound to give them the lead.
The Peas kept up the pressure and got back on level terms when Barrett smashed her penalty home following a handball by Ali Brien.
The second half saw the home side settle into this game and they took the lead when Aine O Gorman reacted quickest to confusion in the back-line of the peas before slotting the ball under the body of Dunne. UCD then grabbed a fourth goal in dramatic circumstances when the match official awarded a penalty against Kealy after a gust of wind saw the UCD striker fall off her feet and in front of the assistant referee but the referee deemed it to be a foul. O Gorman stepped up to fire the ball past Dunne.
The Peas never lied down and kept playing flowing football and brought this match back to within one goal when Amber Barrett sent a scorching free kick goal-wards and McGuirk saved well but Kinsella was on hand to tap home the rebound . Then the turning point of the game was a red card for Kealy as the Referee deemed her to be the last defender when she failed to connect with a long ball and O Gorman clashed with her when trying to get to the ball and with Defenders Doyle & Corrigan side on she was shown a straight red card to the annoyance of the Peas management team. The resulting free kick was tipped over by Dunne.
UCD killed of this match with a fifth late on when a free kick was sent into the peas box and following a scramble Niamh Prior got the last touch to give the Waves all three points. For the Peas its been a hard three games on the road but scoring ten goals in the process gives us plenty to talk about.
